Overview

Summary: Participate in and assist in supporting the laboratory aspects of human clinical trials under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor. Perform laboratory procedures while ensuring the integrity of the studies and the safety and well-being of human subjects. Perform duties in accordance with company’s values, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned at the company’s sole discretion.

 

  • Participates in day-to-day clinical and laboratory activities and procedures, ensuring efficient workflow, appropriate collection and management of research subjects’ laboratory samples, and adequate care and treatment of research subjects.
  • Serves as point of entry for all specimens coming to the laboratory. This entails processing all specimens, completing requisition forms, shipment of samples, and logging in samples on laboratory tracking log according to procedures provided in study protocols and manuals.
  • Reviews client protocols and case report forms for laboratory and clinical logistical issues.
  • Provides lab support including kit preparation, sample labeling, specimen preparation and specimen shipping.
  • Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining clean lab areas and equipment.
  • Assists with receipt and inspection of protocol specific supplies and ordering and stocking of general materials and equipment.
  • Maintains quality control of specimen samples.
  • Maintains a safe environment in the laboratory.
  • Assists nursing staff by performing phlebotomy and collecting blood and urine samples, monitoring and recording vital signs and/or performing other specialized procedures (EKGs, clamps), as appropriate to the specific needs of the study and individual subjects, and as appropriate to level of individual training.
  • Assists with ordering, stocking, and inventory of laboratory, clinical, and office supplies and consumables.
  • Assists with clinical laboratory sample inventory, appropriate storage, and shipping requirements.
  • Helps to resolve laboratory requisition or sample queries from reference labs.
  • Full availability with flexibility to work mornings, evenings, and/or overnight shifts as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus three months health service industry experience, and/or training in a laboratory, research, or clinical environment. Bachelor’s degree in science or health related field strongly preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Able to perform basic clinical procedures correctly including vital signs, ECGs, phlebotomy and sample processing. Demonstrates initiative and problem-solving skills. Able to respect subject confidentiality and blinding procedures. Understands medical terminology and calculations. Demonstrates a strong attention to detail with superior organizational skills with ability to deal with large volumes of data and/or samples while maintaining efficiency and accuracy under tight deadlines. Under general supervision, exercises judgment in accordance with well-defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Able to self-monitor progress and complete assigned tasks independently.

 

Certificates and Licenses: 

Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) and IATA certification and/or willing to obtain certification upon hire.

 

Language Ability:

Must be proficient in both verbal and written English. Able to communicate effectively with both employees and management. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, Work Instructions (WIs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), medical terminology and procedure manuals.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, and database software.
